President Dissanayaka, who graduated from the University of Kelaniya, started his political career as a participant of student political activities associated with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in 1988.
His first appointment as a MP was in 2000, when he was elected to the 4th Parliament from the National list, via the JVP.
